I have loved Agent Pendergast books since their inception (all 18 before this one). But I have noticed a decline in story quality and this book is absolutely ABYSMAL. Basically, it's a "look at what I know about boats and water currents" book with almost NONEXISTENT storytelling. So a bunch of feet washed up on a beach in Florida. And? Why should I care? By chapter 30 the answer is: I don't care. I was so bored I actually tried to return the Kindle version, which I have never done in 15 years. So, as a lifelong bibliophile and lover of Agent Pendergast stories -- I am annoyed and confused about what the authors are doing. If Pendergast could come to life without your permission, I think he would just to put this series out of its misery. Ridiculous, pedantic, overwhelmingly nautical and boring beyond description. What can I say. The pace of the story is good. It is vaguely crafted after two actual occurrences. It moves right along. As it does so, however, it becomes more and more preposterous. The fun of Pendergast has always been his weird thought processes and his involvement in strange adventures that in the end were plausibly explained. In previous novels Pendergast did odd things like lying down in a cornfield to access his thought training abilities. He solved cases by thinking of things nobody ever imagined. Even Cabinet of Curiosities, with its sci-fi type story created a plausible scenario. In this novel, however, Pendergast, Coldmoon, and Constance become comic book superheroes, like Batman, Robin, and Batgirl sweeping in and vanquishing all enemies. The plot would qualify for a high-tech shootem-up James Bond movie. But then perhaps not. James Bond would be embarrassed to be involved in this.More and more frequently authors find themselves compelled to inject their political views into their stories. Sadly, this happens in Crooked River. There’s sort of a disconnect with writers. They’ll sneak phrases in that hint at their kindly worded PC leanings and then torture and kill everybody in the story. Pendergast refers to “undocumented workers” but the villain calls them “illegal aliens.” Earlier Pendergast says he avoid politics, and then qualifies the statement to say especially current politics. I get it. They just can’t resist voicing their superior take on life. Often while reading joyfully along with some dizzy plot, the political view stops one short. It interrupts the flow and doesn’t add to the story. It is unnecessary. It’s also unforgivable to portray the government as evil and then at the end say, “Oh, sorry, it wasn’t the government at all.” Gimme a break. Government villains have their places in stories, sure, but gigantic, overpowering secret groups that the government has no clue exist, but then comes in at the end to mop up the bodies left by Pendergast et. al.? Please reserve that for James Bond.And please, please, NEVER put Aloysious in a lemon colored suit.
